Youth & Teen
Programs

We feel it's important to provide our youth a safe space to be themselves with experienced mentors and guides. We offer a variety of adventurous programs for youth to dive into their innate passion for nature, develop and practice outdoor and leadership skills, and learn about Indigenous wisdom in caring for the land. We encourage participants how to face challenges, explore social justice and truth in historical and contemporary impacts, and develop peaceful communication skills.

Youth

For ages 6 – 14

Outdoor experiential learning and adventures throughout the school year with seasonal activities and traditional skills. We learn about the land and our role as caretakers while following a natural, relaxed pace. We hold respect for ourselves, others, and nature as our core value, and create a truthful understanding of Indigenous culture. We love playing games, following our curiosity, and balance that with giving youth real responsibilities.

Youth need to be dressed for a full day outside in ‘whatever the weather’ and bring a lunch and water bottle in a day pack.

Teen Days

For ages 13 – 18

We feel it's important to offer teens a safe space in nature, to be themselves and supported by experienced mentors. We go on adventures, practice skills, face challenges, have conversations on social justice/truth, and enjoy cooking some good food over the fire. We ask teens what they are excited about doing and nurture their individual gifts.

Teen Days are offered upon request.

Overnights

Sassafras has offered many overnight experiences in the past that bring outdoor learning to another level. Overnights are integrated in some of our programming including Earth Knowledge (for adults), schools and groups can approach us to discuss and design according to your group needs.

Overnights are offered upon request.

Field Trips for Schools & Colleges

Sassafras offers a variety of programs for elementary and highschools, for colleges, and other organizations. In the past, we have facilitated day programs as well as overnight experiences, for the Oak Bluffs School, the Chilmark School, the Charter School, Montessori School and schools and colleges from off-island. Together with the school’s team or teacher, we create a format that includes the school's objectives and financials.
