Truth-telling investigates historic wrongs. Sassafras integrates indigenous stories about our past, present and culture, to address injustices and bring about much needed change. We center indigenous voices, honor the deep knowledge and innovative solutions, and create a path for healing, rectification and reparations.
WHY TRUTH-TELLING IS CRUCIAL
Colonial injustices have ingrained our experiences, communities and societies for 500 years. Building cultural competency is no longer an option for community leaders and educators, it is a vital step to building just, equitable and regenerative ways of life. Representing truthful curriculum content, amplifying silenced histories/narratives, creating respectful representations and language, and addressing rampant cultural misappropriation of Indigenous cultures are all things we address.
OUR APPROACH
Sassafras initiatives go beyond educating, we activate people and youth to create change that results in responsibility and respect for all. Sassafras offers different programs/events that integrate Indigenous awareness and cultural competency building in training, workshops, speaking engagements, and youth programming.
